Because there is no complete one-to-one correspondence between sets and dates, some dates are unknown because they will never exist again. The period of 1851 - 1901 is divided into two. The early Victorian era is the period from 1851 - 1867, with the second half of Queen Victoria's rule in England. Victoria died in 1901. It was an era in which the country experienced rapid industrialization and social change with population growth and greater mobility among workers. It was also characterized by music, painting, architecture and design. The reign of Queen Victoria has been known as "Victorian" for more than a century, but modern historians generally prefer to talk about the long nineteenth century from 1750 to 1914. By the 1830s, Britain was still a major power with worldwide interests and was one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. It is difficult to find pieces of Victorian era furniture, art or decoration because many items were cared for and preserved by descendants. Further, the objects in the collection were often passed through several hands. Because of this, it is possible that original contexts are lost in sets that include more than one item. For example, in the Victoria era, many pieces of furniture had broken legs or missing parts; in sets that include more than one piece, some pieces may have different legs or other parts attached to them. The set includes over 200 individual items which are displayed chronologically. To support my introduction about this project I will use my favorite example of an item in the collection: A child's toy table with drawer for food storage. The set starts with a child's round table for a rich family with four children. The next set is a child's rocking horse with a seat made of caned fabric with red and blue striped bow trim. It was used to teach children how to ride a horse. This set contains child's toys such as toy music box, cork gun and teetotum. Teetotum (sometimes spelled te-totum) is the name of the spinning top in English. A common form consists of an axis on which two identical discs can rotate freely, one marked with numbers from 1 to 6 and the other blank. Players place bets on which disc will spin to the top. It is believed that this set was owned by one of the daughters of the family. This set contains an elegant large table with pedestal, four matching chairs with cane backs, breadboard sides and curved front stretchers for decorative effect. This set has a very sophisticated look. The table has six legs, made of carved wood and connected by stretchers; each leg group consists of two front legs connected by a stretcher at the bottom and two back legs connected by a stretcher at the top.
